Abstract: A comparative study of the humanist academies of Bessarion, Pomponio Leto, Giovanni Gioviano Pontano and Marsilio Ficino, arguing that Ficino's supposed academy resembles an informal school and is not, like the other academies, an association of literary scholars and gentlemen.
