| Abstract: | An account of the history of human experimentation in the United States necessarily involves a recounting of scandals and the research policies that developed in response. This paper aims to provide a review of this history, along with observations about recurring themes that pervade the narrative. In so doing, this author hopes to provide a useful reference, and also to reveal the inherent tensions and difficult problems posed by the conduct of research using human subjects. |
