Abstract: In this paper, I will navigate you through the fascinating odyssey of RU-486 from its initial development in France to its official entry into the U.S. pharmaceutical market to the post-approval strife in which it is now embroiled. While many assumed that the FDA’s approval of RU-486 on September 28, 2000 would mark the final chapter in the story of the drug’s acceptance as an early pregnancy termination procedure, it actually marked the beginning of a new chapter, which ignited congressional efforts to stymie, or even abort, the growth of this chemical alternative to surgical abortion in the United States. As a result of these congressional efforts, the last chapter in the story of RU-486 remains to be written.
