I am an ecologist with a PhD. Nevertheless, like a growing number of my peers, I am not employed in academia and I do not have direct online access to a university library. I am currently writing a book. With articles often costing $35 apiece at academic journals, the cost of my research would simply be prohibitive if it were not for open access journals. The old model of charging readers to purchase articles is broken and would not produce a society that we wanted in any case; the more modern model of charging authors a reasonable fee to help defray the cost of publishing articles (and subsidizing those costs when possible) makes sense.
