AbstractThe medical texts by Caraka and Susruta describe the symptoms, etiology, theory, treatment and prognosis of four types of mental disorders-unmada, bhutonmada, apasmara, and murcha. The present discussion is restricted to unmada-its theory, treatment and prognosis with an indication of the scope of analysis with reference to the Western psychiatric nosology.
