Abstract

It assumed in economics that agents perform rationally. However, there is a bevy of research across fields that show that agents are susceptible to biases which do not fit this assumption. One noted bias is time-inconsistency. In professional baseball, the incentives to reach the playoffs and win the World Series are such that teams may be susceptible to such an error. This paper finds that teams are willing to trade away future value for short-term gains in line with this error.
