Master's thesis, Harvard Divinity School.https://nrs.harvard.edu/URN-3:HUL.INSTREPOS:37372934Scholars of the Hindu traditions are divided over the category of ‘scripture’ and its utility. Besides contesting Oriental encounters and the universalizing conception of the term by early/Western scholars and suggesting varied typologies, they have problematized the notion of canonizing sacred texts. In this project, I interrogate the category of ‘scripture’ with reference to the Rāmacaritamānasa of Tulsīdāsa and its personalization by the Rāmanāmīs. I argue that scripture may not necessarily be synonymous with the material ‘text’ or a ‘collection of texts’ but can also connote relationality. That is, scripture can be understood as implying the interaction of a community with a text.en-USScriptureHindu TextsReligious TextsRamacaritamanasaTulsidasaRamaScripturalizing RamacaritamanasaThesis or Dissertation2022-08-04
