Publication Association of probable post-traumatic stress disorder with dietary pattern and gut microbiome in a cohort of women(Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2023-10-19) Ke, Shanlin; Wang, Xu-Wen; Ratanatharathorn, Andrew; Huang, Tianyi; Roberts, Andrea L.; Grodstein, Francine; Kubzansky, Laura D.; Koenen, Karestan C.; Liu, Yang-YuPost-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric condition that may occur in people who have experienced or witnessed traumatic or horrifying events. PTSD has been linked to an increased risk of various chronic diseases and eating disorders. The gut microbiome plays a critical role in modulating the immune, metabolic, psychological, and cognitive activities of the host. Understanding the association of PTSD with dietary patterns and the gut microbiome may improve the physical and mental health of people with PTSD. Yet, this association remains understudied. Here we analyzed information on trauma exposure and PTSD symptoms with the gut microbiome data and dietary information in 191 individuals enrolled in a substudy of an ongoing longitudinal cohort of women. We demonstrated that higher PTSD symptom levels were associated with less adherence to the Mediterranean diet pattern, and this association was also linked to specific PTSD putative protective species such as Eubacterium eligens. Moreover, the microbial pathways involved in the biosynthesis of pantothenate and coenzyme A were identified as PTSD putative protective, and these pathways were mainly contributed by PTSD putative protective species such as Akkermansia muciniphila. Overall, our findings suggest that PTSD symptoms are highly associated with dietary patterns and gut microbiome. This work offers the basis for future research examining mechanisms driving the relation of PTSD with chronic disease, and invokes studies on whether dietary- or microbiome-based interventions may provide an opportunity for the prevention or amelioration of PTSD.
