The Bunker

Abstract

The Bunker begins twenty years after the Earth has become uninhabitable. The people left have moved into bunkers beneath the surface to survive. The novel, told from Allan’s POV, follows two main characters, Allan and Jacob. Allan is pessimistic and doesn’t believe the world can get better. He is in his late thirties when the story starts and was one of the first Scouts. Allan became a Scout to help save his family from poverty and gain a space for them in the bunker, however his brother and mother passed away before they were able to enter. He has watched everything he cares about perish or be taken away from him. He has resolved to just follow orders and live out the rest of his life avoiding his deep emotional wounds That is until he meets Jacob on his first day of training to become a Scout. Jacob is in his early twenties and idealistic. He is from one of the affluent families that funded the making of the bunker. Although he seems to be a nervous and talkative kid, there is an alternative meaning to everything he says. Jacob believes that it is his sole purpose in life is to unify the world and rectify all the hurt his family has caused. He becomes a Scout to gain access to the outside world in hopes of contacting those that have found a way to survive outside and to discover what his family’s company has really been doing with the missing people. Allan must decide if he is going to report Jacob for breaking code, pretend he is unaware of Jacob’s goals, or join him in creating his vision of the future.
