Master's thesis, Harvard University Division of Continuing Education.

Abstract

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a prevalent disease without complete mechanistic understanding. Medical doctors and scientists alike do not know the cause for the disease and therefore have trouble accurately diagnosing individuals experiencing symptoms phenotypic of IBS. This research aims to determine biomarkers involved in mechanisms associated with IBS through a review of literature to form a generalized gene and microbiota panel for diagnosis through sequencing. Proper diagnosis can lead to effective treatment options and further research into mechanisms for the disease.
