Abstract

This thesis consists of three essays in industrial organization, with a common focus on the production of open source software (OSS)---computer programs freely available for use and modification. The first chapter is an empirical study of how growing government involvement may affect the production of this critical public good. The second and third chapters are methodological, offering recommended practices for Berry, Levinsohn and Pakes (1995)-style estimation of differentiated product systems, along with my own contribution to OSS: a supporting software package PyBLP.
