Abstract
The San Joaquin–Merced River confluence in California stages coupled crises: the agricultural grid’s enclosure onto wetlands and the structural precarity of the migrant workforce that sustains regional productivity. The thesis asks: Can an architectural-and-governance system, a conservation easement, and a resident stewardship cooperative function as civic-ecological infrastructure that provides seasonal housing and organizes paid restoration work, so that dwelling itself defends and repairs a threatened wetland?
The project situates architecture where the grid frays and the wetland reasserts an order tied to time rather than to the industrial machine. Sited at the seam where the grid dissolves, it establishes a time-based commons that renders the rupture in the grid legible and livable. Seasonal housing is contingent on care, and paid restoration takes the form of routine. Presence on site delivers ecological repair and worker dignity through contract-based work, vegetation management, maintenance, and habitat monitoring aligned to seasonal floods.
Architecturally, the proposal calibrates building, territorial, and watershed scales to seasonal flood systems and regulatory thresholds, using light touch siting and legible public interfaces to mark the grid’s pause at the wetland’s edge. Public-facing elements—landing points, work yards, and interpretive edges—make stewardship visible. Staging buffered sightlines and threading movement paths behind built edges and berms creates early warning, concealment, and quick-departure routes, addressing an inherent safety layer missing in most migrant worker housing. Tying tenancy to restoration fixes a civic boundary against conversion, directs value to stewards, and keeps both habitat and seasonal residence for migrant workers viable.
