Abstract
This portfolio archives a series of artistic projects created between 2013 and 2018: Hull Not Continent (2013-2014) for amplified quintet with electronics, Burl II (2014) for amplified quartet, Treader Always in Station (2014-2016) for two tabletop violas with electronics, Lamina Hollow Volume (2015) for prepared clarinet, Maw (2015) for amplified quartet with electronics, Droch (2016) for trio or quartet with bespoke instruments, and Interdictor (2014-2018) for interactive sound sculpture. This archive represents these projects with musical scores, supplementing them with schematics where applicable.
These works, collected, exhibit common themes and objectives. Many of these pieces engage in the artistic representation of alienation, be it within the general domain of subjective experience or vectored with respect to the disciplinary conditions of contemporary classical music. This theme is often expressed with collapsing figure-ground relationships, with the obscuration of musical instruments and instrumentality, and with a global tendency away from the musical score in favor of electrical design and architecture. Further commonalities among the enclosed projects include preoccupations with escapism and fantasy, particularly with respect to science fiction imagery and to speculative relationships with popular music and interdisciplinary art through idiom and practice.
