Abstract

Sociologists have long been interested in racial inequality and status dynamics in groups and organizations. In this dissertation, I study these topics in the context of NBA basketball. The richness of the data, plus the high level of transparency and racial diversity, make the NBA a promising setting for studying racial dynamics and status attainment. Through three essays, I examine how race and status can affect NBA players’ opportunities and offer important contributions to sociological theories on race and status.
