Abstract
Maternity Leave follows a woman in her 30s grappling with the concept of motherhood. While she recognizes procreation as a “typical” thing to do, she doesn’t feel drawn to taking on that journey in her own life. However, as she and her husband reach a turning point in their relationship, she makes a decision that changes both of their lives and kicks off an adventure way outside of her comfort zone. This dark comedy-drama screenplay explores pressures women often face, fears around birthing brand new human beings, and the overwhelming nature of modern life. The protagonist finds herself walking through different options for interpreting and potentially living her life, as she knows that something feels amiss but isn’t quite sure how to identify and address it.
