Abstract
This thesis pioneers a framework for public-private partnerships (PPPs) in strategic communications for dengue prevention in India, informed by interviews with top-tier decisionmakers and executives. Based on work conducted for Takeda Pharmaceuticals Ltd., it delves into the dynamics of collaboration between public health agencies across government echelons and private firms, focusing on disseminating public health messages to improve health outcomes.
The study evaluates collaboration prospects, identifies gaps the private sector can bridge, and assesses public health organizations' readiness for such partnerships. The research identifies critical factors for the success of health sector PPPs: aligning values and goals, sharing responsibilities according to partners' strengths, and a consensus on risk distribution. It discusses how PPPs can strategically use health communications to influence public behavior for dengue control, emphasizing community engagement and government support to extend the initiatives' reach and impact.
The study deduces a novel PPP collaboration framework, providing a blueprint for effective health sector partnerships. This framework stresses clear communication, mutual trust, and commitment to shared outcomes, addressing regulatory navigation challenges, and adapting strategies to local conditions. The framework, derived from extensive interviews and literature review, could be broadly applied to health sector projects involving diverse partnerships.
The thesis contends that PPPs are crucial for leveraging the combined capabilities of the public and private sectors to enhance health outcomes. These alliances can significantly raise awareness, modify behaviors, and reduce vector-borne disease incidences like dengue. The thesis highlights PPPs' transformative potential in public health communication strategies. The proposed framework guides future collaborations, ensuring that initiatives are appropriate and adaptable to the dynamic public health landscape. The insights from this study make a significant contribution to the field, setting the stage for more multi-partner collaborations in health, particularly innovative and impactful health communication campaigns.
