Abstract

Since the inception of the Ethiopian revolution in the mid-1970's, the forced migration of large numbers of Ethiopians has resulted in the establishment of new permanent communities of Ethiopians in the United States. This paper provides a brief, and necessarily partial, sketch of musical life in the Ethiopian American community, spanning several musical genres touching on a cross-section of Ethiopian American musical activities.

I urgently needed to find the 'back story' of krar players as the winner of the Songlines Award will be at my institute in a few days. It is not an instrument or a musical style I am terribly familiar with...and I have to introduce her (the performer) and her instrument to my students for a master class of 300 plus students. So this is great. Thanks. This will help.
