Abstract

Sussman and Marshack criticize Demonic Males as being wrong in its generalizations about chimpanzee behavior, and flawed in its theoretical interpretations. I show that studies of chimpanzees conducted since Demonic Males was published (in 1996) have amply supported the claim that coalitionary killing is an important feature of chimpanzee life. It therefore demands to be explained. The theory developed in Demonic Males remains useful, and can help in the development of nonviolent strategies.

I am an independent researcher covering a broad area. Often, I want to check a paper for a small detail that it may or may not cover. Many papers are behind paywalls. Others are behind walls where it says access is only available if you are attached to an institution. My research is important but I am not an academic. It is tremendously helpful when papers are on open access. Often, I only need to glance at a paper to establish that it's not actually relevant. Paying for this each time would be a serious and unwarranted expense.

If scholars are truly scholars they will make their work freely available. I am a graduate student. Nothing is more frustrating than reading an abstract and then being denied access to the full text. Even through the university library, there are articles I cannot access, nor cite.
