Abstract

We contrast our view of the primary role of statistical analysis as an aid to summarizing evidence with the view that its primary role is to establish facts. Some implications of these differing viewpoints for the publication of nonsignificant results, the relative emphasis on Type I and Type II errors, and the weighting of contrasts by their importance and interest are discussed.
