Abstract
Recent years have been a watershed for fuel cell research, in particular for microbial fuel cells (see for example: Larminie & Dicks, 2000; Bullen et al., 2006; Logan et al., 2006; Lovley, 2006; Du et al., 2007; Rabaey et al., 2007; Schröder, 2007; Logan, 2008). While the majority of microbial fuel cell (MFC) research has focused on the performance and characteristics of laboratory reactors, benthic microbial fuel cells (BMFCs), or those that rely on a potential gradient at a sediment-water interface, have played a significant - sometimes understated- role in the evolution of MFC technology.
