Connors, Joseph. 1998. “Gian Domenico Ottonelli: Scourge of Erotic Art and Popular Theater in Seventeenth-Century Italy,” English version of “Chi era Ottonelli?” In Pietro da Cortona, Atti del convegno internazionale (Roma/Firenze 12-15 november 1997), ed. Christoph L. Frommel, Sebastian Schütze, Milan, Electa, 29-35.

Abstract

Gian Domenico Ottonelli, often thought of a Jesuit art theorist, is shown through a biographical sketch to be a fighter against popular theater in mid-seventeenth-century Rome and Florence, the Italian equivalent of William Prynne and his Histrio-mastix (Scourge of Players) published in London in 1633. Any consideration of his writings as art theory must be dismissed.
