Abstract

Set in ancient Ireland, Awen is a teenage girl, who carries a dark secret causing her to struggle with her identity. She was born into a mystical tribe of healers known as the Keepers, who have powers deeply connected to the earth. Rooted in tradition, Awen and her mother, Maeve, serve as healers to the kingdom of Moycullen. Through prayer, they have visions of things yet to pass. Unlike her mother, and the Keepers code, Awen is attracted to the shadows, instead of the light. When her father fails to return home from battle, Awen learns to fight, with the help from her friend Oisin, so she can take revenge on King Diarmuid and Beara, a female shapeshifter loyal to the king. After Maeve has visions of darkness coming her way, she is poisoned at the winter's solstice celebration and Awen unleashes her darkness onto the world to avenge her parents' death and become the Keeper she was born to be.
