Abstract

This work draws upon late Foucaldian ideas of subject formation within "Hermeneutics of the Subject" to take a constructivist approach to understanding transformation of the subject within the Zen monastery. Monastic life is analyzed according to time, space, social relations, and spiritual practices as to examine phenomenologically the development of an 'enlightened subjectivity'.
