Abstract

The relative orientation between two or more layers of a 2D crystal can create moiré patterns. The patterns have a characteristic size, known as the moiré length, which can be directly controlled by the twist angle between layers. As the moiré length grows, new atomic and electronic phases can emerge. The strong dependence of electronic properties on the twist angle has inspired the name for this new topic: "twistronics". Methods designed for modeling these complicated systems are presented and then applied to a number of important twistronic materials.
