Abstract

The doctoral thesis describes the types of pottery produced in Chamula, a Maya Tzotzil-speaking municipio located north of the Mexican city of San Cristobal de las Casas, in the highlands of Chiapas. Detailed pottery production methods are described, as well as an analysis of the pottery constituents. The marketing system in Chiapas is documented as it existed in 1973 among the Tzotzil and Tzeltal Maya in the highlands and adjacent lowlands. The dendritic marketing pattern of Chiapas is analyzed and compared with other marketing systems including those in nearby Guatemala.
