Abstract

Complex systems, or systems composed of many interacting components, are prominent all around us. As a result of their intricate internal and external interdependencies, they display many fascinating patterns and dynamics. Here we present experimental studies of complex systems falling into three categories: granular media, bacterial biofilms, and crumpled thin sheets. In each of these systems we have identified a feature that confuses or intrigues us, and we attempt to understand these features using customized imaging and analysis techniques to understand the underlying physical factors that contribute to the manifestation of that feature in the system. The results obtained from these studies help us understand, a little more, about the intricacies and dependencies present in these seemingly simple everyday, yet physically complex systems.
