Abstract

Two of the founding tenants of democracy are freedom of speech and freedom to assemble. The deepfake and other forms of disinformation threaten the life of democracy as they misinform the populace who will then act on disinformation. This is a close inspection of how disinformation, in the form of deepfakes, shared on social media impacts democracy. Investigation into the works of some prominent media theorist shapes interrogation of the deepfake phenomenon.
