Abstract
Condensed matter physics has embraced a number of exciting topics in the past two decades including topological insulator, 2-dimensional materials, collective particle hydrodynamics, exotic spin texture, and many body correlated system. The underlining physics associated with them are presenting challenges to the traditional experimental tools and methods. This is especially obvious in probing the local response of the material from mesoscopic to nanometer length scale. One solution to this is to develop novel experimental techniques and methods to overcome the challenges. In recent years, nitrogen vacancy (NV) centers in diamonds have been found to be promising systems that can serve as highly versatile nanoscale magnetic field sensors, capable of imaging magnetic fields with nanoscale spatial resolution and ultra-high magnetic sensitivity. We employ this new magnetometer to explore various topics in condensed matter physics and resolve some of the most important questions.
