I work for a non-profit science union, based in South Africa and operating on a limited budget. We cannot afford journal licenses. Because this article is open access, we can read the research findings and use them to inform the design of our programmes: specifically, programmes that seek to build STEM capacity in low- and middle-income countries and programmes that seek to increase gender equality in STEM globally. These findings will be useful for reducing bias in programme selection decisions; and for giving guidance to academic departments who want to implement more inclusive hiring policies.
