I am an independent researcher with interests in the intellectual connections between France and the United States at the end of the eighteenth century. I completed a PhD in history at Monash University here in Melbourne, Australia, 13 years ago. I am not, however, an academic in the university system; my professional working life is in the State public service, so I benefit greatly from open access initiatives such as DASH, to get access to source materials and to try to maintain my research and writing pursuits in the absence of formal academic affiliation.
