I am currently taking time off after almost 20 years in Research and am mulling a change in specialization. Furthermore, my sister was just diagnosed with AML and I have become her advocate and advisor on her treatment options. Unfettered access to publications from the Harvard Community has been invaluable to me.
In my experience, the free exchange of information and ideas is crucial for advances in academic research. This concept should extend to the general population. Breakthroughs in research are often at least partially serendipitous and often involve individuals that did not follow the traditional academic trajectory as I believe they are freer to question dogma since they were not boxed in by many of the academic training programs. Limiting access to often government funded research to the very people that provide the funding for the research not only seems dishonest, but, I contend it limits scientific advances.
