Open access to academic work benefits me by resulting in my reading it, hopefully learning something from it, and perhaps later transmitting that knowledge to others - maybe just by contradicting fallacious urban folklore with others' research results. If an accessible work is clearly bad, I can simply stop reading and stop wasting my time, but if it were behind a paywall, I would not get my money back, despite the work not having added any value to my life. My practical solution to this information asymmetry problem is to simply not pay to read articles at all - I have other interests competing for my time that don't impose a paywall tax.
