Open access makes reading easier as a civic activity. I study law—and am a member of an intellectual property journal—and the frictions of needless restrictions (overzealous protections) are constantly making publishing in most any form less fun, in my experience. The clarity of the commons is of much assistance to endeavors toward self-realization and communal exchange.
