It is indispensable for setting standards by which the civic journalism movement should be judged. She adroitly notes how much of the popularity of the idea of civic journalism may be precisely due to how ambiguous, sometimes all-inclusive a term it is. When its theories are brought down to earth, she shows, the record of civic journalism in practice is decidedly mixed.
