Publication The 0-brane Action in a General D = 4 Supergravity Background

Our construction is based on implementing kappa-supersymmetry. In particular, our result can be interpreted as the source term for N=2 BPS black holes with a finite horizon area. When the vector multiplets can be associated to the complex structure moduli of a Calabi-Yau manifold, then our 0-brane action can be derived by wrapping 3-branes around 3-cycles of the 3-fold. Our result can be extended to the case of higher supersymmetry; we explicitly construct the kappa supersymmetric action for a superparticle moving in an arbitrary N=8 supergravity background with 1/2, 1/4 or 1/8 residual supersymmetry.
Publication 1 / f α noise and generalized diffusion in random Heisenberg spin systems
(American Physical Society, 2015) Agarwal, Kartiek; Demler, Eugene; Martin, IvarWe study the "flux-noise" spectrum of random-bond quantum Heisenberg spin systems using a real-space renormalization group (RSRG) procedure that accounts for both the renormalization of the system Hamiltonian and of a generic probe that measures the noise. For spin chains, we find that the dynamical structure factor S-q(f), at finite wave vector q, exhibits a power-law behavior both at high and low frequencies f, with exponents that are connected to one another and to an anomalous dynamical exponent through relations that differ at T = 0 and T = infinity. The low-frequency power-law behavior of the structure factor is inherited by any generic probe with a finite bandwidth and is of the form 1/f(alpha) with 0.5 < alpha < 1. An analytical calculation of the structure factor, assuming a limiting distribution of the RG flow parameters (spin size, length, bond strength) confirms numerical findings. More generally, we demonstrate that this form of the structure factor, at high temperatures, is a manifestation of anomalous diffusion which directly follows from a generalized spin-diffusion propagator. We also argue that 1/f-noise is intimately connected to many-body-localization at finite temperatures. In two dimensions, the RG procedure is less reliable; however, it becomes convergent for quasi-one-dimensional geometries where we find that one-dimensional 1/f(alpha) behavior is recovered at low frequencies; the latter configurations are likely representative of paramagnetic spin networks that produce 1/f(alpha) noise in SQUIDs.
Publication A +1 ribosomal frameshifting motif prevalent among plant amalgaviruses
(Academic Press, 2016) Nibert, Max; Pyle, Jesse; Firth, Andrew E.Sequence accessions attributable to novel plant amalgaviruses have been found in the Transcriptome Shotgun Assembly database. Sixteen accessions, derived from 12 different plant species, appear to encompass the complete protein-coding regions of the proposed amalgaviruses, which would substantially expand the size of genus Amalgavirus from 4 current species. Other findings include evidence for UUU_CGN as a +1 ribosomal frameshifting motif prevalent among plant amalgaviruses; for a variant version of this motif found thus far in only two amalgaviruses from solanaceous plants; for a region of α-helical coiled coil propensity conserved in a central region of the ORF1 translation product of plant amalgaviruses; and for conserved sequences in a C-terminal region of the ORF2 translation product (RNA-dependent RNA polymerase) of plant amalgaviruses, seemingly beyond the region of conserved polymerase motifs. These results additionally illustrate the value of mining the TSA database and others for novel viral sequences for comparative analyses.
Publication The 1-by-3 Tandem Differential Mobility Analyzer for Measurement of the Irreversibility of the Hygroscopic Growth Factor
(Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2009) Rosenoern, T.; Paulsen, D.; Martin, ScotA new instrument, namely the 1 × 3 tandem differential mobility analyzer (1 × 3-TDMA), has been developed. Its primary measurement is the irreversibility of the hygroscopic growth factor of aerosol particles. The instrument uses the hysteresis of phase transitions to infer the solid or aqueous state of the particles. A first DMA passes particles of a selected electric mobility at relative humidity RH0. Exiting this DMA, the particles are split into three separate flows. The first flow is exposed to RH0 → (RH0+ δ) → RH0 in a deliquescence test before passing through a second DMA that is set to the same electric mobility as the first DMA. The second flow passes directly to a third DMA without change in RH, thereby serving as a reference arm. This DMA is also set to the same electric mobility as the first DMA. The transmission ratio of the 1 × 3-TDMA is defined as the particle concentration passing the deliquescence test divided by that passing through the reference arm. The transmission ratio is unity in the absence of deliquescence and zero when a phase transition occurs, at least for ideal instrument performance in application to a test aerosol of fully deliquesceable particles. For the third flow passing out of the first DMA, an efflorescence test is run by using the RH profile of RH0 → (RH0-δ) → RH0 before passing through a fourth DMA. A full data set for the 1 × 3-TDMA is obtained by scanning RH0, typically from 20 to 85%. In the present paper, the 1 × 3-TDMA instrument is described, and laboratory data are presented for the phase transitions of externally mixed aerosols of aqueous and solid sodium chloride particles, aqueous and solid ammonium sulfate particles, and their mixtures, as well as a mixture of aqueous and solid sea salt particles. The observed transmission ratio is compared to a model analysis. The intent behind the development of this instrument is to deploy it for field measurements and use observations of the irreversibility of the growth factors of atmospheric particles as markers of their physical state.
Publication 1.3 mm Wavelength VLBI of Sagittarius A*: Detection of Time-Variable Emission on Event Horizon Scales

J.; Titus, Michael; Weintroub, Jonathan; Wright, Melvyn; Woody, David; Young, Ken; Ziurys, Lucy M.Sagittarius A*, the ~4 × 106 M ☉ black hole candidate at the Galactic center, can be studied on Schwarzschild radius scales with (sub)millimeter wavelength very long baseline interferometry (VLBI). We report on 1.3 mm wavelength observations of Sgr A* using a VLBI array consisting of the JCMT on Mauna Kea, the Arizona Radio Observatory's Submillimeter Telescope on Mt. Graham in Arizona, and two telescopes of the CARMA array at Cedar Flat in California. Both Sgr A* and the quasar calibrator 1924–292 were observed over three consecutive nights, and both sources were clearly detected on all baselines. For the first time, we are able to extract 1.3 mm VLBI interferometer phase information on Sgr A* through measurement of closure phase on the triangle of baselines. On the third night of observing, the correlated flux density of Sgr A* on all VLBI baselines increased relative to the first two nights, providing strong evidence for time-variable change on scales of a few Schwarzschild radii. These results suggest that future VLBI observations with greater sensitivity and additional baselines will play a valuable role in determining the structure of emission near the event horizon of Sgr A*.
Publication A 1.9 Earth Radius Rocky Planet and the Discovery of a Non-Transiting Planet in the Kepler-20 System

A transition from rocky to gaseous planets with a planetary transition radius of ~1.6 ${R}{\oplus }$ has recently been proposed by several articles in the literature. Kepler-20b (${R}{p}$ ~ 1.9 ${R}{\oplus }$) has a size beyond this transition radius; however, previous mass measurements were not sufficiently precise to allow definite conclusions to be drawn regarding its composition. We present new mass measurements of three of the planets in the Kepler-20 system that are facilitated by 104 radial velocity measurements from the HARPS-N spectrograph and 30 archival Keck/HIRES observations, as well as an updated photometric analysis of the Kepler data and an asteroseismic analysis of the host star (${M}{\star }$ = $0.948\pm 0.051$ ${M}{\odot }$ and ${R}{\star }$ = $0.964\pm 0.018$ ${R}{\odot }$). Kepler-20b is a ${1.868}{-0.034}^{+0.066}$ ${R}{\oplus }$ planet in a 3.7 day period with a mass of ${9.70}{-1.44}^{+1.41}$ ${M}{\oplus }$, resulting in a mean density of ${8.2}{-1.3}^{+1.5}$ ${\rm{g}},{\mathrm{cm}}^{-3}$, indicating a rocky composition with an iron-to-silicate ratio consistent with that of the Earth. This makes Kepler-20b the most massive planet with a rocky composition found to date. Furthermore, we report the discovery of an additional non-transiting planet with a minimum mass of ${19.96}{-3.61}^{+3.08}$ ${M}{\oplus }$ and an orbital period of ~34 days in the gap between Kepler-20f (P ~ 11 days) and Kepler-20d (P ~ 78 days).
Publication The 10kTrees Website: A New Online Resource for Primate Phylogeny
(John Wiley & Sons, 2010) Arnold, C; Matthews, Luke J.; Nunn, CharlesThe comparative method plays a central role in efforts to uncover the adaptive basis for primate behaviors, morphological traits, and cognitive abilities.[1-4] The comparative method has been used, for example, to infer that living in a larger group selects for a larger neocortex,[5][6] that primate territoriality favors a longer day range relative to home range size,[7] and that sperm competition can account for the evolution of primate testes size.[8][9] Comparison is fundamental for reconstructing behavioral traits in the fossil record, for example, in studies of locomotion and diet.[10-13] Recent advances in comparative methods require phylogenetic information,[2][14-16] but our knowledge of phylogenetic information is imperfect. In the face of uncertainty about evolutionary relationships, which phylogeny should one use? Here we provide a new resource for comparative studies of primates that enables users to run comparative analyses on multiple primate phylogenies Importantly, the 10,000 trees that we provide are not random, but instead use recent systematic methods to create a plausible set of topologies that reflect our certainty about some nodes on the tree and uncertainty about other nodes, given the dataset. The trees also reflect uncertainty about branch lengths.
Publication 11CO2 Fixation: A Renaissance in PET Radiochemistry
(Royal Society of Chemistry, 2013) Rotstein, Benjamin H.; Liang, Steven; Holland, Jason P; Collier, Thomas L; Hooker, Jacob; Wilson, Alan A.; Vasdev, NeilCarbon-11 labelled carbon dioxide is the cyclotron-generated feedstock reagent for most positron emission tomography (PET) tracers using this radionuclide. Most carbon-11 labels, however, are installed using derivative reagents generated from [11C]CO2. In recent years, [11C]CO2 has seen a revival in applications for the direct incorporation of carbon-11 into functional groups such as ureas, carbamates, oxazolidinones, carboxylic acids, esters, and amides. This review summarizes classical [11C]CO2 fixation strategies using organometallic reagents and then focuses on newly developed methods that employ strong organic bases to reversibly capture [11C]CO2 into solution, thereby enabling highly functionalized labelled compounds to be prepared. Labelled compounds and radiopharmaceuticals that have been translated to the clinic are highlighted.
Publication 14-3-3 proteins regulate Tctp–Rheb interaction for organ growth in Drosophila
(Nature Publishing Group, 2016) Le, Thao Phuong; Vuong, Linh Thuong; Kim, Ah-Ram; Hsu, Ya-chieh; Choi, Kwang-Wook14-3-3 family proteins regulate multiple signalling pathways. Understanding biological functions of 14-3-3 proteins has been limited by the functional redundancy of conserved isotypes. Here we provide evidence that 14-3-3 proteins regulate two interacting components of Tor signalling in Drosophila, translationally controlled tumour protein (Tctp) and Rheb GTPase. Single knockdown of 14-3-3ɛ or 14-3-3ζ isoform does not show obvious defects in organ development but causes synergistic genetic interaction with Tctp and Rheb to impair tissue growth. 14-3-3 proteins physically interact with Tctp and Rheb. Knockdown of both 14-3-3 isoforms abolishes the binding between Tctp and Rheb, disrupting organ development. Depletion of 14-3-3s also reduces the level of phosphorylated S6 kinase, phosphorylated Thor/4E-BP and cyclin E (CycE). Growth defects from knockdown of 14-3-3 and Tctp are suppressed by CycE overexpression. This study suggests a novel mechanism of Tor regulation mediated by 14-3-3 interaction with Tctp and Rheb.
Publication The 15-Minute City Quantified Using Mobility Data
(National Bureau of Economic Research, 2022-12) Abbiasov, Timur; Heine, Cate; Glaeser, Edward; Ratti, Carlo; Sabouri, Sadegh; Miranda, Arianna Salazar; Santi, PaoloAmericans travel 7 to 9 miles on average for shopping and recreational activities, which is far longer than the 15-minute (walking) city advocated by ecologically-oriented urban planners. This paper provides a comprehensive analysis of local trip behavior in US cities using GPS data on individual trips from 40 million mobile devices. We define local usage as the share of trips made within 15-minutes walking distance from home, and find that the median US city resident makes only 12% of their daily trips within such a short distance. We find that differences in access to local services can explain eighty percent of the variation in 15-minute usage across metropolitan areas and 74 percent of the variation in usage within metropolitan areas. Differences in historic zoning permissiveness within New York suggest a causal link between access and usage, and that less restrictive zoning rules, such as permitting more mixed-use development, would lead to shorter travel times. Finally, we document a strong correlation between local usage and experienced segregation for poorer, but not richer, urbanites, which suggests that 15-minute cities may also exacerbate the social isolation of marginalized communities.
Publication 16S rRNA Phylogenetic Investigation of the Candidate Division "Korarchaeota"

D.; Cavanaugh, ColleenThe environmental distribution and phylogeny of “Korarchaeota,” a proposed ancient archaeal division, was investigated by using the 16S rRNA gene framework. Korarchaeota-specific primers were designed based on previously published sequences and used to screen a variety of environments. Korarchaeota 16S rRNA genes were amplified exclusively from high temperature Yellowstone National Park hot springs and a 9°N East Pacific Rise deep-sea hydrothermal vent. Phylogenetic analyses of these and all available sequences suggest that Korarchaeota exhibit a high level of endemicity.
Publication 17-beta-Estradiol in relation to age at menarche and adult obesity in premenopausal women

METHODS: We assessed age at menarche by questionnaire among 204 healthy Norwegian women, aged 25 – 35 years. Measures of body composition included body mass index (BMI, kg/m2), waist circumference (WC, cm), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) and fat percentage dual energy X-ray absorptiometry, (DEXA). Daily salivary 17-b-estradiol (E2) concentrations were collected throughout one entire menstrual cycle and assessed by radioimmunoassay (RIA). Linear regression analyses and linear mixed models for repeated measures were used and potential confounding factors and effect modifiers were tested. RESULTS: Among women with an early age at menarche (12 years), the overall mean salivary E2 concentration increased by 3.7 pmol/l (95% confidence interval, 1.8 – 5.7 pmol/l) with each 9.8 cm (1 SD) increase in WC, which represents a 20.7% change in the mean for the total group. Among the same early maturers, a 1 SD (0.06) change in WHR was directly associated with a 24.0% change in mean E2 concentration for the total group. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings support the hypothesis that early age at menarche, together with adult overweight and obesity, result in high levels of 17-b-estradiol throughout the menstrual cycle.
Publication 17β-Estradiol Levels During An Entire Menstrual Cycle In Response To Adult Stature and Insulin, Of Possible Importance For Breast Cancer Risk: The EBBA-I study.

Attained adult stature and insulin levels, risk factors for breast cancer, may also vary in response to the same factors. Thus, we hypothesize that 17β-estradiol, a key factor in the carcinogenesis of the breast, may vary in response to adult height in combination with insulin levels of possible importance of breast cancer risk. Methods: Among 204 healthy women, aged 25-35 years who participated in the Norwegian EBBA-I study, 17β-estradiol concentrations were measured in daily saliva samples throughout one entire menstrual cycle using radioimmunoassay (RIA). Attained height (cm) was measured, and serum concentrations of insulin were determined in fasting blood samples. The associations between adult height, insulin and 17β-estradiol levels throughout a menstrual cycle were studied using multivariate linear regression analyses and linear mixed models for repeated measures. Adjustments for potential confounding factors were performed. Results: A 37.2 % increase in 17β-estradiol levels was observed during the entire menstrual cycle among women with an adult height ≥170 cm (upper tertile) and insulin levels ≥ 90 pmol/L (upper tertile) compared to women with the same attained adult height, and insulin levels < 90pmol/L. The association was even more pronounced when we looked into those women with attained adult height ≥170 cm (upper tertile) and serum insulin ≥ 101 pmol/L (upper quartile) (Fig. 1). Adjustments for potential confounding factors were performed. Conclusion: Our findings support that premenopausal levels of 17β-estradiol vary in response to adult height and insulin levels, suggesting that women who become taller are put at risk for higher estradiol levels throughout the entire menstrual cycle when their insulin levels rise, of possible importance for breast cancer risk.

(IEEE Computer Society Press, 1990) Nitzberg, Mark; Mumford, DavidA model is described for image segmentation that tries to capture the low-level depth reconstruction exhibited in early human vision, giving an important role to edge terminations. The problem is to find a decomposition of the domain D of an image that has a minimum of disrupted edges-junctions of edges, crack tips, corners, and cusps-by creating suitable continuations for the disrupted edges behind occluding regions. The result is a decomposition of D into overlapping regions R1∪. . .∪Rn ordered by occlusion, which is called the 2.1-D sketch. Expressed as a minimization problem, the model gives rise to a family of optimal contours, called nonlinear splines, that minimize length and the square of curvature. These are essential in the construction of the 2.1-D sketch of an image, as the continuations of disrupted edges. An algorithm is described that constructs the 2.1-D sketch of an image, and gives results for several example images. The algorithm yields the same interpretations of optical illusions as the human visual system
Publication A >200 meV Uphill Thermodynamic Landscape for Radical Transport in Escherichia coli Ribonucleotide Reductase Determined Using Fluorotyrosine-Substituted Enzymes

A diferric-tyrosyl radical (Y122•) in one subunit (β2) generates a transient thiyl radical in another subunit (α2) via long-range radical transport (RT) through aromatic amino acid residues (Y122 ⇆ [W48] ⇆ Y356 in β2 to Y731 ⇆ Y730 ⇆ C439 in α2). Equilibration of Y356•, Y731•, and Y730• was recently observed using site specifically incorporated unnatural tyrosine analogs; however, equilibration between Y122• and Y356• has not been detected. Our recent report of Y356• formation in a kinetically and chemically competent fashion in the reaction of β2 containing 2,3,5-trifluorotyrosine at Y122 (F3Y122•-β2) with α2, CDP (substrate), and ATP (effector) has now afforded the opportunity to investigate equilibration of F3Y122• and Y356•. Incubation of F3Y122•-β2, Y731F-α2 (or Y730F-α2), CDP, and ATP at different temperatures (2–37 °C) provides ΔE°′(F3Y122•–Y356•) of 20 ± 10 mV at 25 °C. The pH dependence of the F3Y122• ⇆ Y356• interconversion (pH 6.8–8.0) reveals that the proton from Y356 is in rapid exchange with solvent, in contrast to the proton from Y122. Insertion of 3,5-difluorotyrosine (F2Y) at Y356 and rapid freeze-quench EPR analysis of its reaction with Y731F-α2, CDP, and ATP at pH 8.2 and 25 °C shows F2Y356• generation by the native Y122•. FnY-RNRs (n = 2 and 3) together provide a model for the thermodynamic landscape of the RT pathway in which the reaction between Y122 and C439 is ∼200 meV uphill.
Publication A 200-Million-Year Delay in Permanent Atmospheric Oxygenation

Early atmospheric oxygenation occurred over a protracted period of extreme climatic instability marked by multiple global glaciations2,3, with the initial rise of oxygen to above 10-5 of the present atmospheric level (PAL) constrained to ~2.43 billion years ago (Ga)4,5. Subsequent fluctuations in atmospheric oxygen levels have, however, been reported until ~2.32 Ga4, which currently denotes the perceived timing of irreversible oxygenation of the atmosphere6,7. Here, we report a high-resolution reconstruction of atmospheric and local oceanic redox conditions across the final two glaciations of the early Paleoproterozoic Era, as documented by marine sediments from the Transvaal Supergroup, South Africa. Based on multiple sulfur isotope and Fe-S-C systematics, we demonstrate continued oscillations in atmospheric oxygen levels after ~2.32 Ga, linked to major perturbations in ocean redox chemistry and climate. Oxygen levels thus fluctuated across the 10-5 PAL threshold for ~200 million years, with permanent atmospheric oxygenation finally arriving prior to the onset of the Lomagundi carbon isotope excursion at ~2.2 ± X Ga, some 100 million years later than currently estimated.
Publication The 2006 Economic Report of the President
(American Economic Association, 2006) Feldstein, MartinThis paper is an analytic comment on two chapters of the Economic Report of the President for 2006. Chapter One deals with the economy in 2005 and the outlook for the future. The chapter provides a detailed analysis of the expansion in 2005 but not an explanation of why the expansion occurred despite the sharp rise in oil prices. I discuss the role of easy money in stimulating mortgage borrowing which generated negative savings in 2005. Looking ahead, I comment on the risk to inflation implied by the rising unit labor costs over the past four years. Chapter six deals with the international position of the United States. It provides a useful analysis of capital flows to the United States and the reasons why other countries have current account surpluses. It does not deal with the role of the dollar or the nature of the adjustment that might occur to reduce the US current account deficit. I present some comments on those issues.

(SAGE Publications, 2015) Scott, Kirstin; Blendon, Robert; Sommers, BenjaminThe November 2014 midterm election was the first election since key coverage provisions of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) were implemented, including the Medicaid expansion and creation of the health insurance exchanges. The pre-election variability in the states’ implementation of these provisions coupled with the large number of states selecting their next governor made the election important at the state level. To better understand the role of health care in the recent gubernatorial elections, we analyzed health policy content presented by 71 candidates for governor on their campaign Web sites. Nearly 80% of all candidates discussed health policy on their Web site, including the subset of the 36 winning governors. The predominant focus of health policy content was on the ACA as a whole or its provisions. Medicaid was discussed more often by candidates in non-expansion states than those from expansion states. Based on the statements of winning governors, we expect serious consideration of the Medicaid expansion to occur in at least 4 states, whereas 2 states may make efforts to reverse course. Relatively few winning governors (33%) mentioned the exchanges. Only 1 expressed interest in switching from the federal exchange to a state exchange, which has particular relevance given the Supreme Court’s pending decision on King v. Burwell that could invalidate tax credits on the federal exchange. The prominence of health care in the gubernatorial campaigns strengthens the likelihood that governors will play an influential role in the health system’s future, especially as the ACA undergoes further federal debate.

(Cambridge University Press (CUP), 2017) Blair, AnnI discuss how printing affected the practice of scholarship by examining the working methods of Conrad Gessner (1516–65), a prolific humanist, bibliographer, and natural historian. Gessner supplemented his revenue as city physician in Zurich through his publishing activities. He hailed printing, along with libraries to preserve the books, as crucial to the successful transmission of learning to the distant future. Gessner also used printing as a kind of social media: to reach readers rapidly all over Europe, in order to solicit contributions to his research projects underway, to advertise forthcoming books, and to develop his own thinking through multiple iterations.
